The course will prepare students for a career as a certified nursing assistant. In the Nurse Assistant Training Program, students learn about basic nursing care, emergency procedures, communication, and how to work effectively as a member of the health care team. 

In order to participate in clinical experience and to qualify for the Nurse Assistant examination, students must do the following: obtain a passing grade; possess and present a valid, government-issued photo ID and original Social Security card (cannot be laminated); have a negative TB test and have a clear background check. 

Students must successfully complete a minimum of 44 hours of classroom, 20 hours of hand-on lab instruction and a minimum of 16 hours of clinical training to be eligible to take the state exam. A passing score on both state exams are required for state certification. 

Part One: Theory 44 hours 

In this component of our Nurse Assistant Training, NA class students will learn these aspects of patient care: 

  • Fundamentals: introductory concepts including roles and responsibilities; legal issues; ethics; patient communications; anatomy and physiology 
  • Safety: controlling infection; preventing injuries; responding to emergencies 
  • Providing care: vital signs; positioning/transferring; restorative care; environmental comfort and rest; cleanliness/grooming; meals/fluids; elimination; admissions/transfers/discharges 
  • Special care situations: specific illnesses; dementia/cognitive changes; end of life care; home care 
  • Transitioning from student to employee 

Part Two: Lab 20 hours 

This component builds upon the theory portion of the NA classes through skills practice. Skills that are performed include personal care (bathing, feeding and grooming), positioning the patient, transferring the patient, and taking vital signs such as blood pressure. 

Part Three: Clinical 16 hours 

Upon successful completion of the theory and lab portion of this course students begin the clinical training component of the program, working directly with residents of a long-term care facility under the supervision of a registered nurse.
